Erik Siegel (1961) is systeem architect en XML specialist. Zijn activiteiten lopen van algemene advisering over inzet en gebruik van XML tot de meer technische aspecten, zoals schema ontwerp, transformaties en applicatiebouw. Daarnaast geeft hij lessen en workshops op dit gebied, met name over XSLT.

Erik heeft veel ervaring met de toepassing van XML bij educatieve uitgeverijen. Hier spelen standaarden als SCORM, Content Packaging, LOM metadata en uiteraard DITA een belangrijke rol. Opdrachtgevers in deze branche zijn o.a. ThiemeMeulenhoff en de Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Horeca.

DITA verwerking zonder toolkit

Om DITA te verwerken wordt meestal de DITA toolkit ingezet. Maar wat als dat niet kan?

ThiemeMeulenhoff is één van de grotere spelers op het gebied van educatief uitgeven in Nederland. Men is zowel actief in het basis en voortgezet onderwijs als binnen de beroeps- en volwasseneneducatie.

Uitgevers, en educatieve uitgevers al helemaal, zijn momenteel druk bezig hun content te flexibiliseren. Hoe kunnen we vanuit één set brongegevens meerdere uitgaven voor meerdere media maken?

In dit specifieke geval moest een grote hoeveelheid met DITA maps gestructureerde content worden geconverteerd naar “Content Packages”: zip bestanden met een verzameling gerelateerde content, voorzien van een beschrijvend manifest bestand. Naast de grote hoeveelheid waren ook het gebruik van niet DITA content en de onderlinge referenties tussen de bestanden problematisch. Met behulp van Cocoon werd hiervoor een applicatie geschreven.

Dit verhaal schetst het probleem met zijn achtergronden en gaat, op redelijk hoog niveau, in op de gebouwde oplossing.

Kennis van Cocoon is niet noodzakelijk.

Nico Verwer (1963) is software architect at Withart. He has 15 years of experience in software design and architecture for publishing applications, and has worked for AND Electronic Publishing, Elsevier Science, Kluwer, and Thieme Meulenhoff. He has also designed and realized XML applications for the Dutch Tax Office and Council of State.

Nico has built applications for content management, dat conversion, presentation and product assembly, using XML, XSLT, XQuery and the Apache Cocoon framework.

DITA specialisaties maken zonder pijn

One of the main advantages of DITA is the possibility to create specializations. A specialization offers the possibility to define XML elements that are specific for a domain or industry, while they remain recognizable as DITA elements. Thus, it is possible to define specific information types, and yet reuse existing DITA software.

In practice, it turns out to be difficult to define DITA specializations, because specialization DTDs are complicated and error-prone. They have to satisfy many conditions and are hard to maintain. Often, the solution is to avoid specialization; The pain outweighs the advantages.

This presentation shows a solution for creating and maintaining specializations. The DTDs that are needed for DITA editors, tools and other software are generated from a simple specification.

This approach has been used successfully in a project for the Dutch Council of State, which is the subject of another presentation by Jan Meijer.
