DITA voor een breder publiek

DITA is oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld voor technische documentatie. DITA content wordt dan ook voornamelijk geschreven door daarvoor opgeleide technisch schrijvers binnen het domein van technische documentatie.

Het is echter voor een breder publiek mogelijk om gebruik te maken van de voordelen van DITA, zoals single sourcing,  wanneer de productie van DITA gebruiksvriendelijk is.

Zo kunnen hardware- en softwareontwikkelaars hun bronmateriaal voor de professionele schrijver direct in DITA aanleveren en daarmee de tijd tot de markt verkorten.

En dankzij de Learning & Training specializatie kunnen ook mensen in de educatieve sector profiteren van DITA en hergebruik van content.

Where do you keep your files? Collaborative content development on a common platform

The traditional tools for collaboration - email, FTP, and removable storage - are no longer effective as the complexity of document management increases between customers, graphic designers, translators, technical writers and publishers.

Specifically, the DITA-based workflow is incomplete without a common platform for collaborative authoring, and -by extension- collaborative content development and publishing. What document collaboration platforms are available for the professional writer who uses DITA-based technical documentation?
There are some stringent requirements: A collaboration platform must be easy to use for all the players involved; it must be consistently reliable; it must be secure, with automated file back-ups; and it must be flexible and affordable enough to create when needed (i.e., a software-based solution versus a hardware-based solution).

This talk will review what to look for in a good collaboration platform, and review some best practices for using DITA-based technical documentation on top of such a platform.

How Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100) can help to make a DITA project successful

Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100) is an international standard that helps to make technical documentation easy to understand. Simplified Technical English standardises vocabulary, grammar and style, while letting users control their specific terminology.

Dr. Frans Wijma from Shufra (www.shufra.com.sg) has been a Simplified English expert and consultant for over 10 years. He has worked with companies worldwide, ranging from Boeing to Black & Decker, in industries as diverse as aerospace, defence, machinery, medical equipment, banking and IT.

On the implementation side, Dr. Frans Wijma has helped companies to implement Simplified English Checker tools, such as the Boeing Simplified English Checker (BSEC) and acrolinx IQ.

In his presentation, Dr. Frans Wijma will explain how the ASD-STE100 specification works in practice, with industry examples and details on implementation lessons learned.

Sinds de oprichting van Triview in 1993 heeft Peter zich volledig gestort op de wereld van technische documentatie- en vertaalprocessen. Hij heeft jarenlange ervaring in het uitvoeren en leiden van complexe documentatieprojecten in de software, machinebouw, defensie en electronica-industrie. Al ver vóór er iemand ooit van DITA gehoord had, was Triview’s aanpak al gebaseerd op ‘Single Sourcing’ en ‘Topic Based Writing’.

De laatste jaren is Peter vooral betrokken bij de advisering en implementatie van single source documentatie-, vertaal- en publicatieprocessen. Hij adviseert daarbij zowel lokale organisaties als wereldwijd opererende multinationals. Doordat Triview een uitvoerende tak heeft met zo’n 15 fullime technisch auteurs, technische vertalingen voor vele klanten organiseert en publicaties in alle vormen realiseert, zijn Triview’s adviezen, procesverbeteringen en technologie vooral gebaseerd op wat werkt in de dagelijkse praktijk.

DITA, theorie óf praktijk

Nog altijd ontwikkelen de meeste organisaties hun documentatie in Word(-achtige) omgevingen. Uit de praktijk weten we dat mensen niet zo eenvoudig switchen naar nieuwe technologie én methodieken. Ook de bestaande content, voldoet vrijwel nooit aan ‘standaarden’; de eigen bedrijfsstandaard is vaak al lastig genoeg.

Hoe zorg je er dan voor dat organisaties toch de stap kunnen maken naar een single sourcing omgeving? Hanteer je daarbij een ‘Big Bang’ aanpak, of zijn er mogelijkheden om stapsgewijs te komen waar je wilt zijn?

Bij Triview zijn we geen voorstander van een ‘Big Bang’; je kunt van een fiets niet in één keer overstappen naar een vliegtuig. Te vaak wordt daarbij het doel uit het oog verloren en krijgt de technologie de overhand. Waarom een Big Bang aanpak niet gaat en bovendien veel te risicovol is, zullen we in de presentatie aan de hand van praktijkvoorbeelden laten zien. Hoe je de juiste stappen wel kunt maken, zullen we demonstreren aan de hand van het ‘DITA & meer’ systeem Author-it.
